Buying Fritos From A Vending Machine

Written by Evan Bailyn on 06/16 at 03:48 PM

You know how songs sound better on the radio than they do on CDs? There’s just something special about the fact that the song is being played right at that moment, that it can’t be rewound or repeated. Well, it’s the same with buying Fritos from a vending machine. In contrast to supermarket-sized bags, which are large enough to satisfy whatever urge for Fritos you may have, vending machine bags are small and half filled with air, so you have to savor every salty, delicious chip - and it’s over before you know it.

Another thing that makes Fritos better from a vending machine is the amount of effort you have to expend to get the bag of chips: finding the right change, inserting your coins, identifying the Fritos’ numerical assignment (B7), quietly hoping the bag doesn’t get stuck on the little coils, and sticking your hand in a compartment that was designed for theft prevention, not functionality.

And, just as the song on the radio isn’t immediately replayed, people rarely go back and get another bag from the vending machine. The Fritos have had their moment, and won’t be experienced again for at least a couple of hours.

A friend of mine sent me the link to your blog, which she stumbled upon accidentally. What a find! I’m excited to have discovered someone so consciously focused on childhood. It’s rare to approach the topic in such a specific, detailed way, with every attention paid to nuance, emotion, elusiveness, and intangibility.

But this is not the entry for all that. What I wanted to say was - one of my favorite things to do as a child was press the buttons on the vending machine and receive a treat! Instant gratification, I guess! I hated swimming lessons, but my mom always let me choose a vending machine snack afterwards, and that made it better. (I confess I liked pushing the buttons as much as the snack - why?!) smile

I think I’ve got to read these blogs from the beginning and comment from there. Your writing is quite uplifting. Thanks so much for being brave enough to share! I’m afraid I had terribly bad experiences happen when I did the same.
